Firmness, Feel & Support

Touching the top of the Mariela Extra Firm mattress, the fabric feels velvety soft. Sitting down I can definitely tell this is a very firm mattress. I sink down a little but not that much.  Laying down on my back this mattress feels very firm. This mattress somewhat contours to the curvatures of my body but, not a lot. There is a fair amount of pushback in the mattress.  I can tell why this is the most luxurious extra firm mattress made by Simmons as the support provided by this mattress is unmatched.  My head slopes down and there is a gap underneath my waist. I can feel pressure points in my shoulder and lower back.  On my stomach, I can tell that this would be a good option for a stomach sleeper. My midsection doesn’t sink down and my spinal alignment is even.

Overall this is a very sturdy feeling firm mattress. On our 10-point comfort scale (1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest) we have this rated as a 2. If you absolutely know you like a very firm mattress and are looking for one of the most advanced extra firm mattresses on the market, this would be a great option.

Top Layer of Mattress – Modal yarn

The first layer of this mattress is the luxuriously soft Beautyrest Black mattress fabric made of modal yarn. This durable fabric is made from natural materials and is often used in lingerie and towels due to its moisture-wicking properties. To complete the fabric, it is dipped in a phase change material designed to keep you cool and comfortable during the night.

SurfaceCool Plus Fiber

Located beneath the Beautyrest Black modal yarn fabric layer is the SurfaceCool Plus Fiber. This fiber is also designed to keep you cool and comfortable thru the night. These fibers are made of Tencel fibers and are vertically oriented for maximum breathability.  Tencel is a natural fiber derived from wood pulp and is designed to dissipate body heat. You will find that almost all of the materials used in the Simmons mattresses are designed to keep you cool and comfortable at night.

Comfort Foam

Comfort foam is often used in Simmons firmer mattress models. This foam adds an extra layer of firm yet soft cushioning support to this mattress.

Energy Foam

After the comfort foam is 1″ Energy Foam. Energy foam helps you sleep soundly at night by absorbing motion and shock, making it ideal for couples.

BlackICE Memory Foam

After the Energy Foam layer is the BlackICE Memory Foam. There is 1” of this foam in this mattress. Essentially this foam is an updated version of the Micro Diamond memory foam with an added gel phase change treatment at the surface which is cool to the touch. This foam uses the conductive properties of real diamond particles. A queen mattress has over 250 carats of real diamond particles. Both the use of diamond technology and gel phase change treatment work together to draw heat away from the surface of the mattress, store it, and dissipate it so you can sleep without overheating.

Comfort Response Latex

The last foam layer in this mattress is a ½” of Comfort Response Latex. For people who have a latex allergy, don’t worry. This layer sits so deep in the mattress that your skin will not be in touch with the material. This pinhole ventilated Latex foam is designed to conform and contour your body for maximum pressure relief and promote airflow. This material is also incredibly durable and resilient due to its consistent cell structure. Latex is also known for being an anti-dust mite.

Advanced Pocketed Coil Layer

What makes this mattress truly special is the Advanced Pocketed Coil layer, the core of the mattress. The pocketed coil was first invented by Simmons in 1925, forming the basis of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress. Since then the pocketed coil has been improved and innovated for better conformability, durability, and motion separation. You won’t find these coils in any other Beautyrest line. The difference between these coils and coils in the other Beautyrest lines is that these high-carbon steel coils are triple-strand wrapped creating a stronger coil. They are pre-compressed and individually wrapped in durable yet soft non-allergenic fabric like all other Beautyrest coils. Remember those Beautyrest commercials where they dropped a bowling ball on a mattress with bowling pins set up at the end of the bed, and the pins didn’t move? This is a perfect representation of how these coils work. They are designed to perfectly conform to your body so that when you change sleeping positions you don’t disturb your partner.

AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement

Surrounding the entire outside of the mattress is the AirCool Beautyedge Foam. The purpose of this encasement is to provide extra support and prevent you from rolling or sliding out of bed. This foam is also pinhole ventilated to promote proper airflow throughout the mattress.
