The Simmons Beautyrest Black Calista Extra Firm mattress review is broken up into two parts:

Sleep City Expert | Calista Extra Firm Mattress Review

Firmness Feel & Support

Touching the top of the mattress the fabric feels velvety soft and it has an intricate design. Sitting on the edge of the Calista mattress I am not sinking in very much at all. It feels very firm and sturdy. I can tell the edge support is very sturdy too.

Laying on my back this mattress feels rock hard. It almost feels like laying on a plush carpet floor. In less than a minute my body adjusts to the mattress and I feel the comfort layer of the mattress conforming to my body. I also notice that my body alignment is even when I am laying down on this mattress. Even body alignment is when your head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and ankles are in line with each other. Having even body alignment while asleep is important for reducing back and joint pain. If you are a back sleeper and you know you like a very firm mattress then the Calista Extra Firm Mattress would be a good choice.

When I rotate to my side I can tell instantly this mattress is too firm and would not be a good choice for most side sleepers. There are large gaps between my body and the mattress creating uncomfortable pressure points. If you are a side sleeper and you know you like an extra firm mattress then this wouldn’t be a bad choice but for most side sleepers I would suggest something softer.

On my stomach, again it feels very firm. Generally, I would suggest a firmer mattress for stomach sleepers. When you sleep on your stomach most of your weight drops to your midsection putting pressure on your spine. In order to ease that tension you need a firmer mattress so your stomach doesn’t sink creating more tension.

Overall this is a very firm, dense mattress. On our 10-point comfort scale (1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest) we have this mattress rated as a 2. This mattress is one of the firmest mattresses you will find in the Simmons Beautyrest lines. I would suggest this mattress mainly to back sleepers and stomach sleepers who know they like a very firm, dense mattress.

Interior Breakdown of the Calista Extra Firm Mattress

Top Layer of Mattress – Modal yarn

Starting from the top of the mattress is the luxurious Beautyrest Black mattress fabric made of white modal yarn. Modal yarn is a soft, durable, natural material that is often used in lingerie and towels for its moisture-wicking properties. This material as well as all materials in the Beautyrest Black line are designed to help with Temperature regulation. This material is dipped in a phase change material designed to keep you cool and comfortable during the night further adding to the temperature-regulating benefits of this mattress.

SurfaceCool Plus Fiber

Next, the SurfaceCool Plus Fiber is designed to add comfort to the surface of the mattress and keep you cool and comfortable. These fibers are made of Tencel fibers and are vertically oriented for maximum breathability. Tencel is a natural fiber that is derived from wood pulp and is designed to dissipate body heat so you can sleep comfortably thru the night.

Gel Touch Memory Foam

Next is 3/4″ of Gel Touch Memory Foam. This uniquely soft gel foam conforms and contours the curvatures of your body providing soothing comfort and support to this extra-firm mattress.

Comfort Foam

After the Gel Touch Memory Foam is 1″ of Comfort Foam. Comfort Foam adds firm yet soft cushioning support to this mattress.

Energy Foam

Beneath the Gel touch Memory Foam is 1″ of Energy Foam. This foam adds extra contouring to this mattress for energizing comfort and support.

Micro Diamond Memory Foam

The last layer of foam is ½” of Micro Diamond Memory Foam. Because overheating during the night is a common problem, Simmons wanted to incorporate materials that help with temperature regulation. This foam utilizes the conductive properties of real diamond particles to move heat away from the body helping you sleep comfortably through the night.  The thermal conductivity of diamonds is often used in electronic devices to prevent them from overheating.  250 carats of diamond particles can be found in a queen-size mattress.

Advanced Pocketed Coil Layer

Last but not least is the Advanced Pocketed Coil layer, the core of the mattress. The Beautyrest Black line is Simmons most luxurious line so they use their most luxurious coil. The pocketed coil was first invented by Simmons in 1925 and has since been improved and innovated for better conformability, durability, and motion separation than any other coil. Remember those Beautyrest commercials where they dropped a bowling ball on a mattress with bowling pins set up at the end of the bed, and the pins didn’t move? This is a perfect representation of how these coils work. These coils are designed to perfectly conform to your body so, that when you change sleeping positions you don’t disturb your partner. You won’t find these coils in any other Beautyrest line. The difference between these coils and coils in the other Beautyrest lines is that these high-carbon steel coils are triple-strand wrapped creating a stronger coil. Otherwise, they are pre-compressed, and individually wrapped in durable, yet soft non-allergenic fabric like all other Beautyrest coils.

AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement

Surrounding the entire mattress is ventilated AirCool Beautyedge foam. This pinhole ventilated foam promotes airflow throughout the mattress and offers additional support on the edge of the mattress, preventing you from sliding or rolling out of bed.

This mattress is adjustable base friendly as well.
