Simmons Beautyrest Black Katarina Plush Pillowtop Mattress Review

Simmons Beautyrest Black Calista Extra Firm Mattress

Simmons Beautyrest Black Katarina Plush Pillowtop Mattress Review

The Beautyrest Black Katarina Plush Pillowtop mattress review is broken up into two parts:

1.  A comfort review from a Sleep City sleep expert.

2.  A detailed interior breakdown which will explain where each component is located in the mattress and what each component does for your body.

Sleep City Expert | Katarina Plush Pillowtop Mattress Review

Firmness Feel & Support

Sitting down on this mattress it feels very soft. I sink down to the edge support but I’m not sliding off the edge or falling backward so, it is still supportive.

laying down on my back the response time is a little slow but, in less then a minute this mattress softly conforms to my body well. This mattress has an overall soft enveloping feel with a firm supportive core. I feel good pressure relief in my hips and shoulders. I sink a little bit more in my hips but, that is normal with a plush mattress.

On my side, I get the same feelings as I do on my back. It conforms well to the curvatures of my body and I feel good pressure relief in my hips and shoulders. My body alignment is fairly even and there are barely any gaps between my body and the mattress.

laying on my stomach, my stomach sinks and my body alignment is not even. I would suggest a firmer mattress for a stomach sleeper.

Overall this mattress has a very comfortable, soft, enveloping feel. On our 10 point comfort scale (1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest) we have this rated as a 7. If you are a side or back sleeper who likes a soft mattress this would be a good choice for you.

Interior Breakdown of the Katarina Plush Pillowtop Mattress

Top Layer of Mattress – Modal yarn

Starting from the top of the mattress is the luxurious Beautyrest Black mattress fabric made of white modal yarn. This soft, durable, natural material is often found in lingerie and towels due to its natural moisture wicking properties. To add to the temperature regulating benefits of this mattress, the fabric is dipped in a phase change material designed to keep you cool and comfortable during the night.

SurfaceCool Plus Fiber

After the Modal yarn is the SufaceCool Plus Fiber. This fiber also works to keep you cool and comfortable. SufaceCool Plus Fiber is made of Tencel fibers and are vertically oriented for maximum breathability. Tencel is a natural fiber that is derived from wood pulp, and is designed to dissipate body heat so you can maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature throughout this night.

Comfort Foam

2 1/4″ of Comfort Foam adds an extra layer of firm yet soft cushioning support to this mattress.

AirCool Memory Foam

The next layer is 2” of AirCool Memory Foam. This is where this mattress gets it plush feeling. This foam is often used in Simmons Beautyrest’s plush mattresses. AirCool Memory Foam features an open cell structure which helps dissipate heat and regulate your ideal sleeping temperature. This innovative foam conforms to you body very well and provides proper pressure relief and ease of movement.

Comfort Foam

After The the AirCool Memory Foam is another 1″ of comfort foam.

Micro Diamond Memory Foam

Then there is 1/2″ of Micro Diamond Memory Foam. This foam utilizes the conductive properties of real diamond particles to move heat away from the body helping you sleep comfortably through the night. The thermal conductivity of diamonds is often used in electronic devices to prevent them from overheating. 250 carats of diamond particles can be found in a queen size mattress.

Advanced Pocketed Coil Layer

The last layer of this mattress is the Advanced Pocketed Coil layer, the core of the mattress. The pocketed coil was first invented by Simmons in 1925 and has since been improved and innovated for better conformability, durability, and motion separation than any other coil. You wont find this coil in the other Simmons mattress lines. The Beautyrest Black line is Simmons most luxurious line so they use their most luxurious coil. The difference between these coils and coils in the other Beautyrest lines is that these high carbon steel coils are triple strand wrapped creating a stronger coil. Otherwise they are pre-compressed, and individually wrapped in durable, yet soft non-allergenic fabric like all other Beautyrest coils. Remember those Beautyrest commercials where they dropped a bowling ball on a mattress with bowling pins set up at the end of the bed, and the pins didn’t move? This is a perfect representation of how these coils work. These coils are designed to perfectly conform to your body so, that when you change sleeping positions you don’t disturb your partner.

Coil Gauge

Note that this mattress and the Simmons Beautyrest Black Katarina Luxury Firm Pillowtop mattress interiors are the same except for the coil gauge. The Simmons Beautyrest Black Katarina Plush Pillowtop mattress has a higher gauge of 17 which creates a thinner more forgiving coil. The Katarina luxury firm pillowtop mattress has a lower gauge of 16 which creates a thicker, firmer coil.

AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement

Surrounding the entire exterior of the mattress is the ventilated AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement. This pin hole ventilated foam promotes airflow throughout the mattress and offers additional edge support, preventing you from rolling or sliding out of bed.

This mattress is adjustable base friendly as well.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Luxury Firm Mattress Review

Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Luxury Firm Mattress Review

This mattress review is broken up into two parts:

1.  A comfort review from a Sleep City sleep expert

2.  A detailed interior breakdown which will explain where each component is located in the mattress and what each component does for your body.

Sleep City Expert | Mariela Luxury Firm Mattress Review

Firmness Feel & Support

The top of the mattress looks and feels luxuriously soft. The design on the fabric is very ascetically pleasing as well. Sitting on the edge of the mattress my first thoughts are that it feels firm yet soft and supportive. It has an in-between firmness that is not too soft and not too hard. I don’t sink down very much and I’m not sliding off the edge due to the edge support. When I get off the mattress I notice that the response time is quick. In about 3-4 seconds the foams go back to their original shape. The quick response time means that this mattress has good motion separation so, it will be easy to move around during the night and if you sleep with someone they wont notice your movement.

Laying on my back it feels comfortably firm but not too hard. This mattress doesn’t envelop my body like a plush mattress would but it does contour the curvatures of my body very well. There are no gaps in between my body and the mattress. My body’s spinal alignment is very even so this would be a great choice for a back sleeper who likes a medium firm mattress.

Switching to laying on my side, again it feels firm yet soft and supportive. Not too firm. For a side sleeper I would suggest a soft fluffy pillow or a side sleeper pillow to keep your body in even alignment. Laying on my stomach my torso doesn’t sink very much so this would also be a good choice for a stomach sleeper as well.

Overall this is a very comfortable firm mattress that isn’t too hard. On our 10 point comfort scale ( 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest) this mattress rates as a 3. This mattress would be a great choice for all types of sleepers.

Interior Breakdown of the Mariela Luxury Firm Mattress

Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Luxury Firm Mattress Cutout

The Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela luxury Firm mattress is most comparable to the Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Luxury Firm Pillow top. The only differences between the two is the Mariela luxury firm is not a pillow top mattress and the Mariela luxury firm has 1 ½” inch less Dynamic Response Memory Foam.

Top Layer of Mattress – Modal yarn

Starting from the top of the mattress is the Beautyrest Black mattress fabric is made of modal yarn. You’ll often find this material used in towels and lingerie because it is soft, durable, and has moisture wicking properties. To finish the fabric, it is dipped in a phase change material designed to keep you at an ideal sleeping temperature.

SurfaceCool Plus Fiber

Underneath the Modal yarn layer is the SurfaceCool Plus Fiber which is also designed to keep you cool and comfortable. You’ll notice that all the materials used in these mattresses work together to keep you cool and comfortable during the night. The SufaceCool Plush fibers are made of Tencel fibers and are vertically oriented for maximum breathability. Tencel is a natural fiber that is derived from wood pulp, and is designed to dissipate body heat so you can sleep comfortably thru the night. For additional temperature control check out our Tencel Sheets in our linens section.

Comfort Foam

Comfort foam adds an extra layer of firm yet soft cushioning support to this mattress.

Dynamic Response Memory Foam

The next layer is 1 ½” of Dynamic Response Memory Foam. This foam is often used in Simmons firmer models. Because this Simmons exclusive foam is molded pour foam instead of continuous pour foam, it creates comfortably firm feeling. This foam provides this mattress with conforming back support and pressure relief. Along with its supportive properties, this foam is also ventilated for proper airflow throughout the mattress.

Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam
Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam

BlackICE Memory Foam

After the Dynamic Response Memory Foam is Simmons newest foam innovation, the BlackICE Memory Foam. There is 1” of this foam in this mattress. This foam is essentially an updated version of the Micro Diamond memory foam with added gel phase change treatment at the surface which is cool to the touch. This foam as well as the Micro Diamond Memory Foam, uses the conductive properties of real diamond particles. Both the gel phase change treatment and the use of diamond technology work together to draw heat away from the surface of the mattress, store it, and dissipate it so, you can sleep without overheating.

Comfort Response Latex

The last foam layer in this mattress is a ½” of Comfort Response Latex. This pinhole ventilated Latex foam  is designed to conform and contour your body for maximum pressure relief and promote airflow. This material is incredibly durable and resilient due to it consistent cell structure. For people who have a latex allergy, don’t worry. This layer sits so deep in the mattress that your skin will not be in touch with the material. Latex is also known for being anti dust mite.

Advanced Pocketed Coil Layer

Last but not least is the core of the mattress, the Advanced Pocketed Coil layer. The pocketed coil was first invented by Simmons in 1925 and has since been improved and innovated for better conformability, durability, and motion separation. You wont find coils like these in any other Simmons mattress line.

AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement

Surrounding the entire outside of the mattress is the AirCool Beautyedge Foam. This foam is pin hole ventilated to promote proper airflow throughout the mattress. The purpose of this encasement is to provide extra support and prevent you from rolling or sliding out of bed.

This mattress is adjustable base friendly as well.

Top 5 Kids Mattresses

Top Five Kids Mattresses

Top Five Kids Mattresses
Top Five Kids Mattresses

Most parents would agree that quality sleep is vital for children. The parents who do understand the importance of sleep also take the proper steps to ensure their child gets the ample rest they need – ie: keeping the room dark and quiet, following the same routine every night, or even using white noise to drown out potentially sleep-disturbing sounds. These are all great tactics to keep kids well-rested but what about the mattress? Kids mattresses should provide a supportive, comfortable sleep surface just like mattresses for adults. Purchasing the cheapest possible mattress or using a hand-me-down could leave your child tossing and turning on a bed that doesn’t offer enough support or just plain isn’t comfortable. The good news is there are a lot of options out there for kids’ mattresses that provide the right amount of support. You should invest in your child’s sleep. Fortunately, we have plenty of options that provide good support, are cost-effective, and will last through your kids’ childhood and then some.

Here are a couple of things to consider when shopping for a kid’s mattress.

Size

How tall is your child most likely to be when they are older? Taller children will quickly grow out of a smaller mattress. There is no need to waste money on multiple mattresses to keep up with your child’s growth. It is better and more cost-effective to invest in a larger bed with room for growth so they can continue to use it throughout their teen years.

Here are the recommended mattress sizes for kids.

  • Twin 38” by 75”. Twin mattresses are the smallest size mattress and are a great space saver. Twins are the best for shorter children.
  • Twin XL 38” by 80” (5” longer than a twin). This size is better for children who are expected to grow taller.
  • Full 54” by 75”. This size has a wider sleeping surface and is great for cuddling up for storytime. A full mattress would be a good option for a guest bedroom in the future or could even be taken with your child to college. If your child is taller than 75” you may want to consider a queen size mattress which measures 60” by 80”.

Hand Me Down Mattresses

We do not recommend giving your child a mattress that is more than 7 years old. If the mattress was not good enough for the previous owner, it is most likely not going to be a good option to nurture your child’s growth and development. Sleep is very important to a child’s health. Lack of sleep may affect your child’s weight, performance in school, mood level, and a number of other factors. Think about how you feel after a night of poor sleep. Not good…right? When buying a mattress for your child, consider the same things you would if you were buying a mattress for yourself.

Comfort Level

Include your child in the shopping experience. It can be fun to try mattresses together. If your child is too young to determine their likes and dislikes bring a sibling along to help or use your best judgment. When using your best judgment consider how your child sleeps. Do they sleep on their back, their side, their stomach, or a combination? The position your child sleeps in can help you determine what comfort level is going to be best. Here are some basic guidelines for comfort levels based on how your little one sleeps.

  • Back sleepers– If your child is a back sleeper you’re going to want a mattress that is either in the middle range of comfort (not too soft and not too hard) or on the firm side.
  • Side Sleepers-If your child is a side sleeper you going to want something that is in the middle range of comfort (not too soft and not too firm).
  • Stomach sleepers– If your child is a stomach sleeper you are going to want something more on the firm side. A softer mattress is going to make your stomach sink creating uneven spinal alignment.

When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a mattress that is in the middle range of comfort. On our comfort scale, you will want to look at mattresses that have a comfort level between 4 and 6.

Now that you know what to consider when shopping for a mattress for your child here are the top 5 kids mattresses of 2019

Memory foam topper vs. New mattress

memory foam topper vs. new mattress

memory foam topper vs. new mattressMattress toppers are a quick and (generally) less expensive way to add a little extra cushion to your bed, and memory foam is one of the most popular materials in a topper. But how do you know when it’s right to choose a topper or when it’s time to start with a whole new mattress? We’ve got a few tips to help you make a decision in the memory foam topper vs. new mattress debate.

Scenario 1: Your extra firm mattress that you thought might solve your back pain problems still leaves you tossing and turning.  The solution here: memory foam topper. If your mattress is just a few years old and structurally sound, but too firm for your ideal comfort level, a topper can add the cushion you need. check out our selection of mattress toppers here.

Scenario 2: Your plush mattress feels too soft. The Solution: It depends. Because, It is harder to fix a mattress that is too soft then it is to fix a mattress that is too firm, you need to determine if your mattress feels a little too soft or extremely soft. A memory foam topper, specifically a latex foam topper is naturally firmer than memory foam and can help a mattress that is a little bit too soft, feel firmer. If your mattress is extremely soft and you sink in too much then you will still sink in even with a topper and you will need to look into getting a new mattress.

Scenario 3: You’ve had your mattress for 10 years or so, and there are some saggy spots. The solution: a new mattress. When your mattress starts to develop indents or sags, a topper won’t solve your problem. Instead, you and the topper will sink into the holes. If budget is a concern, look at the  Beautysleep line. They’ve got the high quality and durability you expect from a Simmons mattress, and prices start at a budget-friendly $370.

Scenario 4: Your bed surface is comfortable, but you get overly warm at night. You think maybe a memory foam mattress topper will improve airflow. The solution: a memory foam topper. Memory Foam has come a long way since it first hit the market in the mid 90’s, and you can reduce overheating at night with a gel memory foam topper which captures and distributes heat. Although a gel memory foam topper can help with overheating, if you get overly warm at night and your mattress matches with scenario 3 then a  new mattress would be the best solution. New mattress technology, like what you see in the new Beautyrest Black mattress models, combines gel, memory foam, and the conductive properties of diamond technology to specifically aid airflow so you won’t overheat at night.

Scenario 5: The mattress in your RV is just not doing the job. The solution: memory foam topper. (Unless you live in your RV.) You’re probably not sleeping in your RV enough to warrant a new mattress. Keep it comfortable for your occasional use with a topper.

Scenario 6: You want a luxury mattress without paying the luxury price, so you’re thinking of combining a bargain mattress with a topper. The solution: a new (mid-range) mattress. The reality is, a quality memory foam topper will cost at least a few hundred dollars, and a bargain mattress’ lifespan is short. So in five years, you’ll be looking for another mattress/topper combo. You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get the luxury feel you’re looking for. Plus, a nice, quality, durable mattress will last twice as long as your average bargain find.

Before you decide memory foam topper vs. new mattress, think about the real problem you’re trying to solve. If if you’re simply in need of a little extra cushion, that memory foam topper looks like the right choice. But if you need quality support for night after night, a new mattress is the way to go.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Plush Mattress Review

Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Plush Mattress Review

This mattress review is broken up into two parts:

1.  A comfort review from a Sleep City sleep expert

2.  A detailed interior breakdown which will explain where each component is located in the mattress and what each component does for your body.

So far I have reviewed the top four mattresses in the Beautyrest black line. The Tatiana, Sonya and the Natasha in two comfort levels. If you want to read those reviews to compare between mattresses they are located in our blog archive.

Sleep City Expert | Beautyrest Black Mariela Plush Mattress Review

Firmness Feel & Support

Touching the top of the mattress the fabric is velvety soft and smooth. Sitting on the edge of the mattress it feels soft but not too soft. It’s not as soft as a pillow top mattress but not at hard as a firm or luxury firm mattress. Getting off the mattress the response time is quick. In about 3-4 seconds the foams go back to their original shape.

Laying on my back this mattress feels cloud like but not so much that you are being enveloped by the mattress. This mattress softly conforms to the curvatures of my body very well. I can feel the support and pressure relief in my shoulders and lower back.

On my side I get the same feelings of soft support and pressure relief. When I lay on my stomach my torso doesn’t sink down too much therefore it would be a fair choice for a stomach sleeper who likes a plush mattress.

Overall this mattress is a very comfortable plush mattress. This mattress sits in a medium range of softness that is a little more on the soft side. Although this mattress is soft, is has a firm supportive core. On our 10 point comfort scale (1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest) this mattress rates as a 6. I would suggest this mattress to all types of sleepers who enjoy a plush mattress that has a medium softness level.

Interior Breakdown of the Mariela Plush Mattress

The Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Plush mattress is most comparable to the Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillow top. The only differences between the two is the Mariela Plush is not a pillow top mattress and the Mariela Plush has 1 ½” inch less AirCool Gel Memory Foam.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Plush Mattress Cutout
Simmons Beautyrest Black Mariela Plush Mattress Cutout

Top Layer of Mattress – Modal yarn

Starting with the top of the mattress is the velvet soft Beautyrest Black mattress fabric made of modal yarn. Modal yarn is a natural fiber often used in towels and lingerie because, of its softness, durability and moisture wicking properties. For additional temperature control this fabric is dipped in a phase change material to keep you cool and comfortable during the night.

SurfaceCool Plus Fiber

Next is the SurfaceCool Plus Fiber. The SurfaceCool Plus fiber is made from Tencel, a natural fiber that is derived from wood pulp. This fiber is designed to dissipate body heat so you can sleep comfortably thru the night. For maximum breathability, these fibers are vertically oriented as opposed to horizontally so, air can freely move through the surface of the mattress.

Comfort Foam

After the SurfaceCool Plus Fiber is 2 ¼” of Comfort Foam. Comfort Foam provides extra comfort and support. Like all Simmons foams it is CertiPUR- US approved.

AirCool Memory Foam

The next foam layer is 1 ½” of AirCool Memory Foam. This unique foam features an open cell structure which helps dissipate heat away from the surface of the mattress and increases airflow so you can sleep well without overheating. This innovative foam also has an incredibly plush feeling, responds quickly to your body, and provides proper pressure relief and ease of movement. Because this foam is so responsive, it returns to its original shape in seconds which makes it easy to change sleeping positions without sinking into the mattress.

Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam
Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam

BlackICE Memory Foam

Beneath the AirCool Memory Foam is 1″ of the BlackICE Memory Foam. This foam as well as the Micro Diamond Memory Foam, uses the conductive properties of real diamond particles to absorb heat away from the body, contributing to the temperature control this mattress provides. A queen size mattress has over 250 carats of real diamond particles. Essentially this foam is an updated version of the Micro Diamond Memory Foam with added gel phase change treatment at the surface, making this the coolest foam innovation Simmons has to offer. If you get a chance to touch this foam at a Simmons retailer, it is noticeably cool to the touch.

Comfort Response Latex

Above the pocketed coil layer is ½” of Comfort Response Latex. This material features a consistent cell structure throughout the layer making it resilient and durable. Comfort Response Latex is pinhole ventilated to promote air flow, and conform and contour your body for maximum pressure relief and comfort.  If you have a latex allergy, do not fear. The latex layer is located so deep in the mattress that your skin will not be in touch with the material. Also Latex foam is known for being anti dust-mite.

Advanced Pocketed Coil Layer

The last layer in this mattress are the Advanced Pocketed Coils. The Advanced Pocketed Coils are exclusively used in the Beautyrest Black line, making this line the most comfortable and durable. These coils are designed to conform to every curve of your body as well as provide outstanding motion separation so you don’t disturb your partner when you move in the night. What makes these coils different then the original Beautyrest Pocketed coils is that these high carbon steel coils are triple wrapped creating a stronger coil. Then they are pre-compressed, and individually wrapped in durable, yet soft non-allergenic fabric like the original Beautyrest Pocketed coils.

AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement

Encompassing the entire mattress is the AirCool Beautyedge Foam encasement. This pin hole ventilated foam promotes airflow throughout the mattress and provides some additional support on the edge of the mattress, preventing you from rolling or sliding out of bed.

This mattress is adjustable base friendly as well.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillowtop Mattress Review

Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillowtop Mattress Review

The Simmons Beautyrest Black mattresses are incredibly comfortable and durable, making them the most popular mattress line Simmons offers. If you are looking for an innerspring pillowtop mattress that is incredible soft,  provides proper support, and helps keep you at your ideal sleeping temperature then the Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillowtop mattress would be a great choice.

This mattress review is broken up into two parts:

1.  A comfort review from a Sleep City sleep expert

2.  A detailed interior breakdown which will explain where each component is located in the mattress and what each component does for your body.

Sleep City Expert | Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillowtop Mattress Review

Firmness Feel & Support

Touching the top of the mattress the fabric feels velvety soft and smooth. The fabric also has an aesthetically pleasing design. As I sit on the edge I notice that this mattress is super soft like the Tatiana. Definitely up there with the softest mattresses I’ve ever tried. Like all the Beautyrest Black models the edge support is preventing me from sliding off the side. When I stand up off the mattress the response time is quick. In about 2-3 seconds the foams go back to their original shape.

Laying on my back the mattress feels super soft and the response time is quick. This mattress quickly conforms and envelops my body like a cloud. It’s like the mattress is giving me a hug. I notice that my hips are sinking a bit more than the rest of my body which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but, if you have bad back problems then you may need a mattress with more support.

When I lay on my side again I feel that this mattress is very soft and it conforms well to my entire body. I notice my spinal alignment is mostly even so this would be a good choice for side sleepers who like a really soft mattress. On my stomach my torso is sinking a lot so this would not be a good choice for a stomach sleeper. When your stomach sinks your spinal alignment is not even. Ideally you want your body to have even spinal alignment for a good nights sleep.

Overall this mattress is extremely soft and comfortable. If you like a super soft mattress this would be a good choice for you. I wouldn’t suggest this mattress to people who have bad back or shoulder pain. Also stomach sleepers steer clear of this mattress and go for something firmer. This mattress has a comfort rating of 7 on our 10 point comfort scale, 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest. Compared to the Simmons Beautyrest Black Tatiana Ultra Plush Pillowtop, the Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillowtop feels slightly less soft and supportive then the Tatiana.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillow Top Mattress Cross Section

The Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Plush Pillowtop Mattress is similar to the Simmons Beautyrest Black Tatiana Ultra Plush Pillowtop mattress. The only difference between the two is the Tatiana has an extra layer of micro coils which provides more comfort and support. See Simmons Beautyrest Black Tatiana Ultra Plush Pillowtop Mattress Review to compare.

Top Layer of Mattress – Modal yarn

Starting from the top of the mattress is the Beautyrest Black mattress fabric made of modal yarn. Modal yarn is a natural material that is specifically designed to wick away moisture. Along with its moisture wicking properties this fabric is incredibly durable and soft. You’ll find that modal yarn is often used in lingerie and towels. To complete the fabric, it is dipped in a phase change material designed to keep you cool and comfortable during the night.

SurfaceCool Plus Fiber

Next is the SurfaceCool Plus Fiber. This fiber is located directly beneath the soft Beautyrest Black modal yarn fabric and also works to keep you cool and comfortable during the night. These fibers are made of Tencel fiber which is designed to dissipate heat away from the body. For increased breathability, these fibers are vertically oriented to maximum breathability.

Comfort Foam

Next is 2 ¼” of comfort foam. This is a luxuriously soft yet firm foam that provides some extra comfort and support. Like all the foams Simmons uses in their mattresses this foam is CertiPUR-US approved.

Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam
Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam

AirCool Gel Memory Foam

After the comfort foam layer is 3” of AirCool Gel Memory Foam. Featuring an open cell structure, this foam helps increase airflow throughout the mattress by dissipating heat away from the surface of the mattress to keep you cool and comfortable through the night. This foam softly conforms to your body while providing great pressure relief. Because this foam is so responsive and quickly returns to its original shape, it’s easy to move around without sinking.

BlackICE Memory Foam

Below the AirCool Gel Memory foam is 1″ of BlackIce Memory foam. The BlackIce Memory Foam is essentially the Micro Diamond Memory Foam with added phase change material (PCM) at the surface of the foam. With the use of added PCM and the conductive properties of real diamond particles, this foam is one of Simmons coolest foam technologies. This conforming foam is designed to keep you at your ideal sleeping temperature so, you can sleep comfortably thru the night. When you visit your local Simmons showroom you may get a chance to touch this foam and you’ll find that it is noticeably cool to the touch.

Comfort Response Latex

The last foam layer in this mattress is 1/2″ of Comfort Response Latex which is only used in the top of the line Beautyrest Black Models. For people who have a latex allergy, do not fear. The latex layer sits so deep in the mattress that your skin will not be in touch with the material. This pinhole ventilated material is designed to promote air flow, and conform to your body for maximum pressure relief and comfort. This material also features a consistent cell structure throughout the layer making it resilient and durable. Latex is also known for being anti-dust mite.

Advanced Pocketed Coil Layer

What makes the Beautyrest Black mattress truly special is the Advanced Pocked Coils. The Advanced Pocketed Coils are exclusively used in the Beautyrest Black line, making this line the most comfortable and durable. These coils are designed to conform to every curve of your body as well as provide outstanding motion separation so, you don’t disturb your partner when you move in the night.

AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement

Surrounding the entire mattress is an AirCool Beautyedge Foam encasement. This pin hole ventilated foam is designed to promote airflow throughout the mattress and provide some extra edge support to prevent you from rolling or sliding out of bed.

Spring Cleaning: Mattresses

Beautyrest Silver level 1Welcome to our second installment of Spring Cleaning!  Last week, we discussed pillows but this week we are on to mattresses!  Cleaning your mattress may seem like a daunting task, but I can assure you that it will pay off in the end.  Mattresses are one of the most used objects in our home so it’s no question that every once in a while they need some love in return.  And plus, mattresses tend to collect some pretty creepy, crawly things that I’m pretty sure no one wants sleeping with them every night.

So, here are a few tips for how to freshen up your sleeping space:

  • Vacuum it! – While this advice may seem silly, it is a very efficient way to keep dust and dirt off of your bed.  Just use the upholstery attachment to give your mattress a quick clean.spring cleaning mattress
  • Specialized cleaners – Upholstery cleaners are great because they help get rid of dust mites and are made especially to clean surfaces that come in contact with skin.  Enzyme cleaners are useful for getting rid of any bothersome stains, especially those caused by urine. Spot clean your mattress with your cleaner of choice by spraying the spots moderately. Then with a clean, cold, wet sponge or cloth, dab the spot to pick up the cleaner and the stain.
  • Lay your mattress in the sun – Giving your mattress a “suntan” will help dry out any mold or mildew that may have accrued over time.  Moisture in mattresses is unavoidable, but laying it in the sun should solve some of the problem. Also, using a mattress protector can help protect your mattress from moisture and stains. If laying your mattress outside isn’t an option, you can lay your mattress in a room with lots of natural light with the windows open.
  • Common disinfectants – These should help kill any of the spores from mold and mildew that linger after you’ve dried it out and vacuumed it.
  • Citrus cleaners – These fruity cleaners are perfect for removing stains caused by colorful drinks, as well as other unidentified mattress stains.  But remember! After you spray, be sure to blot, not rub, the cleaner out of the mattress with a clean towel.
  • Baking soda – Baking soda works great for deodorizing your mattress and removing stains such as urine. Click here for useful instructions on how to clean stains such as urine with baking soda to clean and deodorize your mattress.
  • Get a new one! – Feel like you can clean and clean, but your mattress will never be quite what it once was?  Maybe it’s time to break up with your mattress.  Talk to our sleep experts to find the perfect replacement.

For further reading on cleaning your mattress, check out our blog post on how to clean your mattress.

Hope this installment of Spring Cleaning clears up some of your mattress cleaning mysteries!

Cheers and sleep well.

How Do I Choose the Best Pillow?

How do I choose the right pillow
How do I choose the right pillow
Most pillows look similar

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing the correct pillow.  After all, you do spend 1/3 of your life using them.  Below are some tips that can be applied as a good starting point when choosing a good, comfortable pillow.

Experts say comfort is your primary consideration, but it shouldn’t be the only factor to consider when buying pillows. You also have to think about neck support, potential allergens, and long-term durability.

Why is Choosing the Correct Pillow Important?

Pillows provide support to the head and neck while you are sleeping.  In addition to providing comfort, the right pillow should provide appropriate support for the neck and spine—alleviating or preventing any form of back and/or neck pain.

An incorrect pillow that does not provide the appropriate support in the right places can contribute to headaches, neck pain, shoulder or arm numbness, discomfort, snoring, sneezing, and wheezing (trouble breathing), which could lead to extra tossing and turning, which leads to lack of sleep. This has an effect on you both mentally and physically.

  • Mentally – Lack of sleep affects your concentration, judgement, memory, mood, and stress levels.
  • Physically – Lack of sleep can contribute to soreness and pain, slow the healing process, prolong illness, and lead to immune system breakdown, weight gain, fatigue, and a variety of other health issues.

What is Inside this Pillow?

From soft to firm pillows, the type of fill for your pillow is really a personal choice. Most pillows look similar.  When looking inside the pillow you will find a variety of fillings, including soft down and feathers or synthetic down; latex foam; high-tech gel and memory foam. All pillow types have their pluses and minuses. Below you will find different pillow explanations that will help you choose the best pillow for your sleep needs. It’s important to discover how comfortable the right pillow can be.

Down Pillows
Down pillows are made from duck and goose feathers.  Down clusters are made up of light, fluffy filaments that expand and intertwine to form air pockets. These clusters trap air to create nature’s most effective insulator. That’s what makes down so light and fluffy.

A lot of companies will rinse their down multiple times to remove dust and allergens that cause allergic reactions.

Memory Foam Pillows
Memory foam pillows are comprised of dense foam that reverts back to its original shape after sleep and typically offer very good neck support. These are popular because they reduce pressure points by continuously molding and adjusting to the shape of your body as you move throughout the night. Memory foam pillows come in various shapes, including a popular contoured S-shape, which is meant to support the neck.

When choosing a memory foam pillow, it’s important that you choose a higher quality brand as many of the cheaper memory foam pillows come with lower density foam and inexpensive components.

Latex Pillows
Latex pillows conform to your head and neck for comfort and support. Latex itself has a resilient feel. Latex pillows generally come in two forms: a solid core for a bouncy, solid feel, or a shredded and/or granulated filling for a down like feel that doesn’t compact over time. Latex pillows are hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, mildew proof, and dust mite resistant.

Gel Pillows
If you like a memory foam pillow and you are a warm sleeper who experiences overheating at night, then a gel pillow would be a great choice. Gel pillows are popular because along with conforming comfort, gel pillows help capture and dissipate heat creating a cooler pillow. You can find gel pillows in various shapes and sizes including contour s-shape pillow for back sleepers and L-shape for side sleepers. Sleep City carries the best gel pillows made with the best quality materials from the best brands in the market including Technogel and Malouf.

Specialty Pillows
Specialty pillows include all other pillows that don’t fit the “normal” category.

  • Aromatherapy Pillows
  • Wedge Pillows
  • Wrap Around Pillows
  • Shape Pillows

Why Does my Sleeping Position Matter When Choosing a Pillow?

Everyone has their own sleeping position. There are side sleepers and back sleepers as well as stomach sleepers.  The best thing a pillow can do for you is keep your head and neck in a natural position during sleep (“natural position” means keeping your spine the same as if you are standing). To find the most appropriate pillow for your body type, you should become aware of your sleeping habits. Keep in mind that you may start sleeping in one position and end up in another.

I Sleep on my Back, now What?
Back sleepers need thinner pillows so their head isn’t thrown too far forward. Look for a pillow with extra loft in the bottom third of the pillow to cradle your neck. If you sleep on your back, you will want to consider a medium or thin pillow. The proper height for the pillow depends on your body build. Sleep experts usually recommend adding an extra pillow underneath your knees when you sleep on your back to further help align and support the natural curvature of your upper spine, which in turn provides support under your head, neck, and shoulders. A pillow that is of medium firmness would probably be the correct choice.

I Sleep on my Side, Now What?
Side sleepers need a firmer pillow to fill in the distance between the ear and outside shoulder. If you sleep on your side, then you need something to support your head and neck correctly while you sleep.  This will prevent a kink or “crick” in the neck, so to speak.  Ideally you will be looking for a medium density pillow so your spine maintains a straight, horizontal line. A firmer pillow would probably be the correct choice.

I Sleep on my Stomach, Now What?

Stomach sleepers need a thin, almost flat pillow. Some may not even need a pillow for the head but might consider tucking one under the stomach to avoid lower back pain and support the natural curvature of the spine.  Stomach sleepers should be cautious of higher profile pillows as that could increase the chance of placing their spine into very unnatural positions and causing neck or back pain.  A thinner type of pillow would probably be the correct choice.

I Move Around a lot While I’m Sleeping, Now What?
Moving around or tossing and turning in your sleep creates a need for a good all-around pillow type.  This means not too dense or thick for most individuals.  You’re looking for a pillow that provides proper support for the average build in all positions.  Some active sleepers choose a half and half pillow.  That is half memory foam on one side and latex foam on the other.

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing the appropriate pillow.  The above information is a great starting point when choosing a good, comfortable pillow. Below is coupon code for our readers and some of our favorite pillows.

Spring Cleaning: Pillows

Spring cleaningSpring is here and you know what that means!  Spring Cleaning has arrived!  For the next few weeks, our experts here at Sleep City will be giving you helpful tips on getting your sleeping space into tip top shape, and they may even have a few deals for you too!

So, let’s get started.  The topic of the day:  Pillows

Did you know that 10% of a 2 year old pillow’s weight is made up of dust mites??  Gross, I know.  If you think that the state of your pillow is past help, you may want to think about investing in some new pillows altogether!  Pillows should generally be replaced every 2 years, or as soon as you feel that they are harming your sleep rather than helping it. If you can’t remember when you got your pillow try the “fold test”. Fold your pillow in half and let go. If it unfolds then it can be cleaned and slept on. If it does not unfold then it’s time to ditch it for a new one.

For those of you who still have pillows that are in relatively good shape, a tune up may be just what the doctor ordered.  Here are some helpful tips and tricks for cleaning your down or fiberfill pillows and memory foam pillows

Cleaning Down and Fiberfill Pillows

  • Check the label!:  This goes for all types of pillows.  If your pillow still has a care label attached to it, your best bet is to simply follow those instructions.  Then again, we all know how annoying those labels are (I generally cut mine off immediately) so if that’s the case, hope it’s not lost.
  • Repair tears: Before washing your down or fiberfill pillows, make sure there are no holes or tears in them. If there are, stitch them shut. You don’t want a washing machine full of cotton or feathers.
  • Throw it in the washing machine:  For all down and fiberfill pillows, the best way to clean them is to toss them into the wash on a gentle cycle with warm water.  We recommend throwing two pillows in at once to ensure the washer stays balanced. Set your washer to rinse twice.
  • Tumble dry: On a gentle cycle, with very low heat for 20 minutes.  Throw in a dryer ball to help plump them up and keep the fill from clumping. After 20 minutes, fluff your pillows. If they are still wet dry them for longer.

Cleaning Memory Foam Pillows

  • Keep the pillow covers clean:  This is especially important for foam pillows as those cannot be washed in a washing machine. Many foam pillows do have a case that they come in though, which can generally be cleaned in a washing machine, just check the care label.
  • Get out your vacuum:  Make sure your vacuum is on the lowest setting and use it to suction dust from your foam pillows with its upholstery tool.
  • Tumble dry:  On a gentle, air only cycle for 20 minutes, a spin in your dryer should do a foam pillow some good.
  • Spot clean:  Use a damp, sudsy towel to spot clean areas of your foam pillow, but be careful to make sure it is completely dry before placing it back on your bed.
  • Hand wash:  This is your best bet when it comes to foam pillows, but be careful!  When foam pillows become wet they tear very easily.  Some foam pillows will have instructions for hand washing.  If so, follow them. If you don’t have instructions, place your pillow in lukewarm water with a some mild detergent (not too much). Press down on your pillow to soak up the soapy water. Then with cold water carefully rinse your pillow until the water is no longer soapy and runs clear. After hand washing air dry on a clean, flat surface inside or outside on a sunny day.

Tune in next week for our next installation of Spring Cleaning!

Cheers and sleep well.

Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop | Mattress Review

Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop Mattress Review

Simmons Beautyrest Black mattresses are Simmons’ most luxurious innerspring mattresses. Consumers are flocking to the Simmons Beautyrest Black line because of the superior support, quality construction and luxurious feel these mattresses provide. The Simmons Black Mattress line is a perfect combination of technical innovations and opulent comfort.

If you are looking for an innerspring mattress that is going to last, provides proper support, and helps keep you at your ideal sleeping temperature then any Simmons Beautyrest Black mattress would be a perfect choice.

These mattress reviews are broken up into two parts:

1.  A comfort review from a Sleep City sleep expert

2.  A detailed interior breakdown which will explain where each component is located in the mattress and what each component does for your body.

Sleep City Expert | Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop Mattress Review

Firmness Feel & Support

Touching the top of the Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop mattress feels velvety soft. My first thought is that it is soft, supportive and firm. Probably the firmest pillowtop I’ve tried but it is still nice and soft to the touch. I notice that I sink down a little less than the Sonya. I can feel the AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement doing its job keeping me from sliding off the bed. When I stand up off the bed, the response time is quick like the Tatiana and the Sonya. In about 2-3 seconds the mattress goes back its original shape.

Laying on my back the mattress feels soft with a firm core.  The mattress responds and conforms well to my body. I can definitely feel good pressure relief with this mattress. Laying on my side I notice the mattress is a little firm for a side sleeper but it still conforms and supports my body well.  When I am lying on my stomach I don’t sink down as much as I did on the Tatiana and the Sonya so it would an okay choice for a stomach sleeper. Comparing this mattress to the Sonya Luxury Firm Pillowtop, the Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop is a little firmer but it is close to the same comfort as the Sonya.

Overall this mattress is very supportive and comfortable. The Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop is definitely a firmer pillowtop. It rates as a 4 on our 10 point comfort scale: 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest. This mattress would be a great choice for people who mainly sleep on their back and prefer a mattress that is firm.  Even though this mattress is firm it is still soft allowing the mattress to be very supportive and comfortable at the same time. If you are a side and/or stomach sleeper this mattress would be an fairly good choice depending on you comfort preference.

Interior Breakdown of the Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop Mattress

Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Luxury Firm Pillow Top Mattress Cutout
Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Luxury Firm Pillow Top Mattress Cutout

The Simmons Beautyrest Black Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop Mattress is similar to the Simmons Beautyrest Black Sonya Luxury Firm Pillowtop mattress. The only difference between the two is the Sonya has an extra layer of micro coils which provides more comfort and support. See “Simmons Beautyrest Black Sonya Luxury Firm Pillowtop Mattress Review” to compare.

Top Layer of Mattress – Modal yarn

Starting from the top of the mattress is the luxurious Beautyrest Black mattress fabric made of modal yarn. Modal yarn is a soft, durable, natural material that is designed to wick away moisture. This fabric is often used in lingerie and towels. To finish the fabric, it is dipped in a phase change material designed to keep you cool and comfortable during the night.

SurfaceCool Plus Fiber

Next, the SurfaceCool Plus Fiber is designed to keep you cool and comfortable. This breathable fiber is located beneath the luxurious Beautyrest Black modal yarn fabric. These fibers are made of Tencel fibers and are vertically oriented for maximum breathability. Tencel is a natural fiber that is derived from wood pulp, and is designed to dissipate body heat so you can sleep comfortably thru the night.

Comfort Foam

Next is 2 ¼” comfort foam which is made from a high quality polyurethane material and has the CertiPUR- US seal of approval.

Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam
Simmons Beautyrest BlackICE Foam

Dynamic Response Memory Foam

After the comfort foam is 3” of Dynamic response memory foam. This is where this mattress gets its firm feeling. Because this Simmons exclusive foam is molded pour foam instead of continuous pour foam, it creates firm yet comfortable, conforming back support and pressure relief. Along with its supportive properties, this foam is also ventilated for proper airflow throughout the mattress.

BlackICE Memory Foam

Then we get into the BlackICE Memory Foam. There is 1” of this foam in this mattress. This is one of Simmons newest foam innovations. It is an updated version of the Micro Diamond memory foam with added gel phase change treatment at the surface. If you get a chance to touch this foam at a Simmons retailer, it is noticeably cool to the touch. This foam as well as the Micro Diamond Memory Foam, uses the conductive properties of real diamond particles to absorb heat away from the body. A queen mattress has over 250 carats of real diamond particles.

Comfort Response Latex

Getting close to the bottom of the mattress there is a ½” of Comfort Response Latex. This pinhole ventilated Comfort Response Latex is designed to promote air flow, conform and contour your body for maximum pressure relief and comfort. This material has a consistent cell structure throughout the layer making it resilient and durable. For people who have a latex allergy, do not fear. The latex layer sits so deep in the mattress that your skin will not be in touch with the material. Also Latex foam is known for being anti-dust mite.

Advanced Pocketed Coil Layer

Last but not least is the Advanced Pocketed Coil layer, the core of the mattress. The pocketed coil was first invented by Simmons in 1925 and has since been improved and innovated for better conformability, durability, and motion separation than any other coil. Remember those Beautyrest commercials where they dropped a bowling ball on a mattress with bowling pins set up at the end of the bed, and the pins didn’t move? This is a perfect representation of how these coils work. These coils are designed to perfectly conform to your body so that when you change sleeping positions you don’t disturb your partner. You won’t find these coils in any other Beautyrest line.

AirCool Beautyedge Foam Encasement

Surrounding the entire mattress is ventilated AirCool Beautyedge foam. This pin hole ventilated foam promotes airflow throughout the mattress and offers additional support on the edge of the mattress, preventing you from rolling or sliding out of bed.

The Beautyrest Black Natasha Luxury Firm Pillowtop mattress is adjustable base friendly as well.
